Things That Caught My Attention This Week
It’s been a week of more chaos, more rightward slant, and more layoffs in the media, but in spite of it all, there are still plenty of opportunities to make a living wage and do good work.
In the latest round of industry churn, Vox Media sold its gaming vertical, Polygon, to Valnet, (which I shared insight into back in March) resulting in more than 20 layoffs and the exit of several longtime editors. Radio Free Asia has slashed nearly all of its U.S.-based staff after losing federal funding, effectively ending its ability to serve global audiences in critical languages. And in Northern California, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat was quietly sold to Alden Global Capital, a hedge fund infamous for newsroom cost-cutting and hollowing out local coverage.
One of the most controversial developments, however, comes from Voice of America. Now under the influence of Kari Lake—acting as a senior advisor to the U.S. Agency for Global Media—VOA has begun incorporating content from One America News Network. OAN’s history of promoting conspiracy theories and partisan misinformation raises serious questions about VOA’s credibility. Critics warn that folding OAN into America’s international broadcasting arm risks undermining U.S. soft power and weakening our ability to provide trusted, fact-based journalism in repressive media environments.
While it seems like a lot of doom and gloom, this week’s newsletter includes some really great and high-paying opportunities.
