week’s job search has nearly 40 new remote and hybrid jobs that pay up to $2 per word for freelance work, and $253,000 per year for skilled journalists, writers, video producers and shooters, and communications professionals.
The jobs wax and wane each week. Some weeks there will be fewer opportunities than others, but this is a particularly robust week with jobs at places like the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI, Axios, The Atlantic, Business Insider, Dwell, Conde Nast Traveler, Yahoo, Reddit, Amazon, the Union of Concerned Scientists, The Daily Beast, Washington Post, and many others.
For less than the cost of a cup of coffee you can get access to these listings, editor email addresses, pitch guides, rates, and any insights I can offer about what its really like to work at these outlets.
Things That Caught My Eye This Week: Taco Bell Quarterly and MSNBC’s hiring streak

This pretty much sums up where my head is at this week.
If you subscribe to a number of newsletters, like this one, you frequently see the same jobs repeated over and over. Some of that is due to the echo chamber effect: There are only a few editors putting out the same low-paying calls for pitches, and it’s highly likely that those editors are all followed by the same people who are both looking to pitch those outlets and looking to curate newsletters like this one.
That being said, this is the third time in less than a week, that I’ve seen a call for pitches for Taco Bell Quarterly. While the pay rate is well below what I curate in this newsletter, it makes me smile to see these kinds of publications out there doing their thing.
This one in particular only pays $150 for prose, poetry, art, comics, and “experimental content,” but I’ve had more than a few subscribers flag it to me–and muse about what it would be like to write a story for the outlet. If anything its a good exercise in creativity–and I suspect that placement will be pretty competitive because it is so off the beaten path.
On a more serious note, I recently stumbled across this post by a connection at MSNBC.
Apparently MSNBC is going to be going on a hiring spree (more than 100 new positions) in the coming months, much like Bloomberg has, as that company builds out its DC bureau (A major benefit of being a paid subscriber: You already know that I’ve included those jobs in this newsletter over the last few weeks, and you got them very early on.)
If you’re interested in blindly applying to those nebulous upcoming MSNBC jobs, there’s a form you can fill out and submit your resume. My advice is to wait and see what the jobs are, where they’re located and how much they’ll pay.
I’d also recommend holding off because you can (and should) tailor your resume to every job you apply to–so that you can stand out regardless of whether a human or AI scans your work history. It’s common advice, but I can promise you it will make you stand out more if you wait and apply to specific jobs that interest you at MSNBC instead of just blindly dumping your resume into some black hole and hoping that someone eventually reaches out to you.
I will keep an eye on those MSNBC jobs for you and include the specifics in upcoming newsletters as they begin to filter out–but you’ll have to be a paid subscriber to find out more on the inside scoop at the company.
If you’ve already taken the plunge with me, thank you.
I’m really glad you’re here.
