Things That Caught My Eye This Week
While building out the newsletter this week, a couple of things caught my eye.
First up, this post (and story) on Fast Company’s Instagram feed made me stop in my tracks, especially because I regularly cover how AI and ML are being used to undermine real, human jobs and applications on the market. It turns out that catfishing has become part of the jobs world, too. Read more of the story over at Fast Co here.
As someone who has 100% been catfished by a mega-corporation and suffered through a year of absolute hell (that nearly cost me my relationship, amongst other things), I can tell you, that living through an experience like that can absolutely destroy you. It wreaks havoc with your mental and physical health and truly undermines your most important asset (especially when it comes to being an independent freelancer)—your confidence. Funny thing: The experience frequently parallels that of an abusive marriage or relationship full of gaslighting and control. Ask me how I know…
Coming back from an experience like that takes time, patience, and a whole lot of introspection. I’m curious: Have you ever had a similar experience? It seems to be particularly rampant in media. Sound off in the comments if so. I’d love to hear more about your experiences.
On the upside, this piece from The New York Times gives me a lot of hope for niche publications. It’s a great story about the rise of the niche fashion magazine, and it could offer a good jumping off point for you if you’re a freelancer that’s looking to place a story. You can read it here.
To that end, there are a couple of niche outlets on this week’s list that actually pay a living wage.
