Why I Vet Every Job on This Newsletter: Questionable Jobs at Questionable Companies

Last week, I stumbled across this job via one of the many journalism jobs newsletters that I subscribe to, and it gave me real pause. A legitimate newsletter creator that I have followed for a long time, who generally gets it right on the regular, included it in their newsletter as a real opportunity, so I wanted to find out more about it.

The description seems largely AI-generated (the “not this, but that” construction is a dead giveaway), if typically glowing, and somewhat aggressive about the qualifications.

Any company that’s pushing AI hard (like this one is) is always questionable to me. After all, we live in the days of overinflated AI claims, and a brief look at the listing and the company raises several suspicions.

My usual process when I find an interesting job is to poke around their corporate site and LinkedIn page and read any reviews I can find on other platforms, ranging from BBB and TrustPilot to Glassdoor and more. There are no reviews of this company, which claims to have worked with Fortune 500 companies, or, as they write on their “Who We Serve,” page, “Company We Hold.” They include logos from companies like Cisco, HP, Cox, and more.

The language on the company’s site is full of buzzwords and convoluted explanations that make no sense on close reading. If I can’t actually figure out what a company does in the first 30 seconds, I am highly skeptical that it’s a real company.

Second, the typos (like those I mentioned above), throughout the company’s pages (which, admittedly, I also make), are a real giveaway. The glaring series of them at the very top of this page is problematic and immediately raised my suspicions.

The biggest red flag for me, however, is that the company lists no pay rate for the role. Anyone looking to hire legitimate, skilled journalists and comms folks will always be upfront about pay rates. If they aren’t, they’re trying to get a deal by undercutting the market, hiding the real rate, and making you jump through hoops to apply.

That’s exactly why you’ll never see jobs like this on this list that waste your time and your energy.

Unlike many other journalism job newsletters out there, I personally vet every job link I include on this list and verify that it is a real job at a real company with real pay.

Normally, I’d include a role like this on the Dishonorable List, where I regularly call out companies that do sus things or severely underpay, but this instance was egregious enough to warrant a warning above the paywall.

This is precisely why I don’t just compile links to media and communications jobs, throw them into a newsletter because they’re recent, and then charge for access to that newsletter. Instead, I use my own well-honed journalism skills and deep experience to vet them, every single week, just for you.

That’s a pretty outstanding offering in a crowded and noisy newsletter market, and it’s exactly why this newsletter is such a deal and why it stands out in the crowded jobs newsletter market.

If you’re tired of combing through fake job listings or applying for jobs that pay well below what you’re worth, this is the newsletter for you.

A Quick Note for Former Mailchimp Subscribers

Those of you who were recently migrated from Mailchimp to Beehiiv may have seen a double charge for this newsletter on your card. If this is the case, please reach out to me at [email protected], and I’ll resolve it for you. It’s a little bit of a hangover from the migration, but it’s been solved (and you should not see a double charge again). I apologize for the inconvenience.

Speaking of Applying Your Critical Thinking…

Chess is a surprisingly good training ground for critical thinking.

If you play chess online (on Chess.com, for example), there’s a tool you should be using to get better at the long game.

The app is called Chessalyze, and it is a new Android app that imports your games from Chess.com and Lichess, then gives you move-by-move Stockfish analysis with accuracy ratings, move classifications (brilliant, blunder, and everything in between), and an interactive evaluation graph, plus player insights including strengths and weaknesses, all running locally on your device. You can rerun old games to learn where you went wrong, and you own all the data.

Sign up via this Google Doc link to try it out and give feedback before he releases it into the wild. Once you sign up, you’ll get a link to download the app for free. Right now, it's only available to Android users, but he plans to open it to Apple users once he completes this round of testing. If you signed up last week, be sure to find the automated email response and download the app to start learning from your games.
