Today’s note will be brief, as I’m slammed with work this week, but I want to touch on something that I think is really important: The role of editorial calendars. Kelsey Ogletree recently wrote a great LinkedIn post about how journalists should pitch these kinds of stories and what you need to know about them.
The high-level takeaway: Spotting a theme on a calendar and firing off a cold pitch is rarely enough to land a story.
Calendars are directional tools, not open invitations. Many are built primarily for advertisers, and features are often assigned months or even a year before an issue publishes. What actually moves the needle, according to Ogletree, is doing deep research on the publication before pitching, thinking in broader trend angles rather than single-source or topic stories, and pitching with cross-platform ideas in mind.
Today, editors frequently test story concepts on social media first, then move them to digital, and eventually into print. A pitch that understands that pipeline stands out.
If you want the formula to land pitches successfully, I wrote an ebook to teach you how to use it, and it works 80% of the time. It’s worth the investment if you’re truly serious about making it as a Six-Figure Freelancer.
Finally, I have one note of housekeeping: A long-time subscriber let me know that the Vox Deputy Director role that I shared last week may be a ghost job, and he’s probably right. He applied for it through his direct contact last August and has heard nothing since, but the job remains ostensibly open. I’ve seen this role pop up repeatedly over the last few months, so be aware.
This Week in Six-Figure Media (and Media Adjacent) Jobs
It's a bit slimmer across the board this week. Blame the fact that World War 3 has started…
That being said, there are still lots of opportunities to land great bylines and make some money at the same time.
Freelance Opps include:
🌍Calls for pitches for National Geographic
📹 Freelance video roles
🗞️ Open calls for content calendars for some major lifestyle magazines that pay well
Full Time Work includes a surprising number of editorial roles at big companies, including
🏘️ Zillow
⚖️ ProPublica
💻 Yahoo
And a whole lot more.
I’ve also found some epically bad Dishonorable Mentions for you to avoid.
As always, everything on this list is remote or hybrid and pays a minimum of six figures annually.
