AI is coming for you!…. Or is it?

Last week, the Washington Post shared a neat interactive showing which jobs will be most affected by AI, and it’s an interesting look at what the Bezos-owned outlet thinks will be outdated thanks to the new tech.

You’ll notice that writers and authors are highly impacted (and from the WaPo POV, least adaptable). While I do think that our work (journalism, writing, etc.) is under pressure from AI, I don’t think that we should wring our hands and wail about it. We need to adapt and use it intelligently–and know that there is real blowback against its use in creative and journalistic work.

Just look at this story in the New York Times, recently. Shy Girl, a self-published book by Mia Ballard, was flagged by readers as “heavily reliant” on AI, leading to her losing the publishing deal with Hachette. She says that the editor she hired used it, but that the original was all her own work.

Either way, any AI use in creative or journalistic work is being outed by real-life human beings, and most people do not support it. That’s good news for the real humans like you who read and interact with this newsletter every week.

WaPo also thinks that Journalism is under attack from AI, and I agree (just see last week’s newsletter), but I also think there is a real opportunity here for talented, human journalists who do good non-AI work every single day.

I know many of you are SO tired of hearing about AI, and I understand. But I also think it’s really important to stay informed about what’s really happening in the space, because you can adapt quickly.

As I mentioned in last week’s post, there is a lot to learn from the AI pitches that outlets like Business Insider, Wired, and Dwell have fallen for, which will make us all better journalists, writers, and creators in the face of the increasing pressure from AI.
