The Future of Writing is Corporate?
I stumbled across this article from Business Insider, just this morning, on why the hottest jobs in tech are no longer engineering or programming jobs, but rather writing jobs. I’ve seen this myself in my weekly searches with more and more high-profile tech, financing, and sales companies building out entire “in-house” newsrooms. It’s happening in automotive too–just look at GM’s efforts, for example.
While this is largely a result of the AI-slopification of the web, as BI’s story points out, it's a boon for those of us looking to continue earning a living wage in this world. There are a ton of high-paying opportunities if you know where to look–they just may not look like the old jobs of the past.
As the story points out, both the compensation for these kinds of roles, as well as the ability to work remotely or hybridly, are making them really competitive, but that’s why journalists like you are so well-suited for the roles.
I include a lot of these kinds of positions in my list each week, (if they fit my rubric–remote or hybrid, and more than six figures in pay), but if you’re looking more aggessively to get out of the journalism world, Sonia Weiser (who is the founder of a fantastic freelance newsletter, I used to subscribe to a few years ago before she sold it to StudyHall), has launched a new project called A Lesser Evil, where each week she puts together jobs that pay $80k or more specifically focused outside of journalism. Most are remote but may require in-office time. If you’re looking to make a jump, this is a great resource to consider. (*A previous version of this newsletter noted that jobs were in-person; this was incorrect*)
This trend of in-house newsrooms, of course, comes on the heels of more layoffs at the Washington Post (announced today), as well as layoffs at PBS, Vox, the WSJ, and many other outlets in just the last month. If you’re working towards building a sustainable career in journalism or adjacent fields, I think the writing is on the wall. As I constantly say, continuing to diversify your income stream and your skills is the only way to survive in this post-capitalist world.
Keep growing your journalism (and yes, your AI) skills, keep learning, and understand where you can leverage your human expertise (and humanness) to do a job that can pay your mortgage, feed your family, and keep you safe and warm.
