Happy Holidays

This will be the last newsletter of the year due to the holidays. In the last few years, I’ve put together this newsletter during these holiday weeks and found that job and pitch opportunities are very limited, and very few people have the time or interest to apply, so I’m going to take my own advice and take a little break. I’ve sent out 50 of these newsletters for the third straight year in a row, and I’m so glad that you’ve decided to come along on this journey.

I’ve personally been overwhelmed with end-of-year work so this will be another short note.

I promise to bring back the longer, more comprehensive pieces in the New Year, once things slow down. I’ll also get an AI & Journalism workshop on the calendar for those of you who might be interested in attending.

Since this is the last newsletter of the year, I will send you off on a positive note: I stumbled across an interesting Instagram post that really gets at the heart of why I am (relatively) optimistic about AI & Journalism in the future.

Shae Omonijo is a PhD candidate at Harvard (History) and has started sharing compelling content on how to “stay human” in the current age of AI. In her short piece (which links out to YT), she talks about the fact that people who can think critically, understand (and unpack) context, navigate complexity, and communicate effectively will thrive in the world where AI (Agentic and otherwise) will be everywhere. Those are all crucial skills that journalists exercise and train on a daily basis–it’s literally the embodiment of the work we do.

I’ve been surprised by how many well-placed journalists (full-timers at nationally recognized outlets, in fact) have simply said, “I’m just not going to use AI and I’ll ignore it until it goes away,” as a solution. Burying your head in the sand and ignoring the future knocking on your door is not the path forward, and in fact, it will make you unemployable and outdated in short order.

So take heart, freelancers and full-timers–and don’t be like journosaurs of the past who refused to (as my swimming coach used to say…) adapt, improvise and overcome. I’ll help you through this transition with my upcoming workshop on how to use AI in a more ethical and sustainable way that will help you get jobs, land stories and be a better journalist.

In the new year, we’ll get together to find a sustainable path forward for all of us.

Rest well, be kind, do good work, and I’ll see you in the new year.

As always, jobs are either fully remote or hybrid, and they pay at least $1 per word, or six figures per year.

Otherwise, you’ll need to become a $5 per month subscriber to get access to these jobs, pitch guides, editor email addresses, and more.
