Six-Figure Journalism, Media and Communications Jobs for the Week Ending August 8

This week there is TONS of new freelance work, that pays up to $2 per word and $130,000 per year, and a handful of new remote jobs that pay up to $250,000 per year. Dishonorable Mentions are on a roll, too!

If you’re on the job market right now, you know how tough things are. Especially if you are in journalism or any adjacent media work. I stumbled across this piece from Inhersight and thought it was really relevant to both this newsletter and the current job search environment.

What stands out to me about this piece, is something I think we all need to remember: A job is transactional, which means both sides of the bargain MUST get some benefit from it.

From the job applicant/seeker perspective, compensation is the most common way that companies offer a “benefit.” But as someone who has been an independent contractor and business owner for more than 11 years now (and who’s been subject to golden handcuffs at a job that was absolutely horrible for me, my relationship, and my health), I can tell you that that “benefit” absolutely must extend beyond just the financial transaction. There has to be some measure of fulfilment, passion, and connection to the work. After all, these companies are paying to own 90% of your time and your life, so the question I always ask myself is, what is that commitment worth?

That rubric is different for everyone. It can be as simple as: It lets me pay my rent, I can put my kids through school, or simply enjoy a hobby. There is no universal right answer, just YOUR right answer. The piece above outlines some really solid questions everyone should ask themselves when looking for work that will be sustainable. No one wants to work for a toxic boss, or in a horrible work environment–and those questions can help you determine what makes the most sense for you.

If you’ve met me IRL, you know that I talk a lot about bringing my whole self to work–that means my perspectives, my politics, my personality, and my passion. For some bosses, that’s intimidating, but, personally, I know that I cannot sacrifice those parts of me to fit into someone else’s box–and I won’t do it.

That being said, this week’s newsletter has 20+ new calls for pitches and freelance work that pays up to $130,000 per year. I’ve gathered a small handful of full-time rolls that are fully remote and pay up to $250,000 per year, too.

I’ve also got a unique Dishonorable Mention story for you this week, too—and a wealth of new terrible jobs.
