What Caught My Eye This Week: A Dumb Story in the New York Times

In the category of THIS IS NOT NEWS:

Recruiters use AI to scan resumes!

DUN, DUN DUN

Yeah…

The New York Times finally caught up with the rest of the world, yesterday, and posted a story about how recruiters (and platforms) use AI to scan resumes—and how all those TikTok suggestions to put AI instructions or hidden skills in white are a terrible idea.

As someone who regularly applies for jobs (many of which end up right here in this newsletter), I never use that trick. But I do use AI — the smart way.

Here’s my process: I upload my latest resume (minus contact info, because no thanks) and ask GPT to tailor it for a specific job listing. I’ve built a refined prompt that keeps it focused, cites sources, and mirrors my tone. Once I get the customized version back, I run a clean Word export, tweak it myself, check it for factual accuracy (yes, really) and send it off.

Anecdotally—It’s made a huge difference and I’ve seen significantly more responses from real (yes, human!) recruiters — and landed more interviews — since I started using AI this way.

So I’m with the experts in that (obvious and dumb) NY Times piece: if recruiters and platforms are using AI to filter out skilled and talented workers like us, we might as well use it right back.

IMHO, it just proves that you actually know how to work in an AI-driven world and understand how to play (and win) the game.

📺 Just for Fun 📻

If you’re a public radio nerd like me, you’re always looking for two things: Jobs at local NPR stations and cool and interesting ways to support your local favorites.

If you’re also like me and a “geriatric millenial,” you grew up on daytime public television reruns of Bob Ross and his happy little trees whenever you got to stay home sick from school. (Some of us even revisit Bob Ross as a way to fall asleep these days, too. Just sayin’😉😉)

For those of you who love this kind of nostalgia and want to find a way to continue to support public media (because hello, we watching the fall of democracy in real time), PBS is auctioning off Ross’ paintings on November 11 (Bonhams has the contract initially) and there will be auctions in New York, London, Boston, and online.

I’m not gonna lie, since I made a big move in August, I feel like I could make space for a Bob Ross painting on one of my walls…

No one knows how high those auctions will go 😬 –so as a backup, I have plans to buy one of these crop tops (because  Maggie’s stellar designs actually got picked up by NPR!) or, even better, one of these sweatshirts. Oh, and just in case you were wondering, PBS does have an Amazon storefront, too.

This week is solid all around.

Highlights include:

  • 👩‍💻A bunch of remote freelance jobs that pay up to $115,000 per year (for part-time work)
