What Caught My Eye This Week: AI is not a Database (and Why That Matters for Journalists)

Despite nearly canceling my NYT subscription over that headline, this story in the same paper stopped my scroll. It highlights how a CalMatters reporter used an AI tool called Digital Democracy to uncover that many California lawmakers quietly kill bills that they make impassioned speeches about, by not voting at all. The CalMatters piece is kind of a non-story because if you know anything about politicians, this is their MO. (Just look at what Congress has been doing for the last 40 days…)

What stood out to me was the quote that the Times used from the CalMatters reporter, Ryan Sabalow: “I don’t think I could have done that without this database.” While Digital Democracy is a database that collects everything that's said, done, and funded in the California State Legislature, and it is constrained to just those parameters, out-of-the-box AI (like GPT, Perplexity, etc.) is not a database.

To be clear, AI doesn’t find facts; it analyzes existing data to reveal patterns. For journalists, using these tools to help refine research and fact-check claims,  that distinction matters. Knowing how to work with AI, and not mistake it for search, may soon be as essential as knowing how to use FOIA.

The Times article goes on to mention the number of news organizations scrambling to figure out how best to use AI — and how to avoid its embarrassing errors, like those that have happened at places like Wired and Bloomberg. There’s no real conclusion to the piece, just “hey this is happening,” that ends with a “We’re just going to leave that there,” close, which leaves a lot to be desired, especially from the NY Times.🙄

For those of us looking for work or trying to future-proof our careers, this story simply underlines where the industry is headed and the importance of understanding how to use AI in your workflows (and understanding its limitations). Editors everywhere are experimenting with AI — sometimes clumsily, sometimes brilliantly—and journalists and freelancers who can wield AI tools with precision, understanding, and skepticism will have the edge. The skill set for journalists is shifting fast. Understanding how to guide AI, rather than be replaced by it, is quickly becoming the next must-have newsroom credential.

I’ll be running an AI for Freelancers session in the near future (timing is still TBD due to my travel schedule and the holidays, but I should have it buttoned up soon) to help you understand how to navigate this changing world and get a grip on best practices to ensure your work is up to par. If you want a quick primer ahead of this session, I address how to use AI when crafting your pitches in my new ebook and include the exact prompt I use to keep things reigned in. Get yours here.

Six-Figure Pitches: The Success Playbook for Landing High-Paying Stories in Top-Tier Publications in a Changing Media World

If you’ve ever stared at a blank email, wondering how to pitch your dream story to a top editor — this book is for you. In Six-Figure Pitches, Emmy-winning journalist Abigail Bassett shares the proven framework she’s used to land assignments with nationally known, top-tier publications, including The Atlantic, The Verge, Fast Company, Fortune, Forbes, Elle Magazine, National Geographic, Observer, Travel + Leisure, and more. Drawing from more than fifteen years in national newsrooms and a decade as a full-time freelancer, Bassett distills everything she’s learned about what editors actually want — and how to deliver it. This isn’t another generic writing guide. It’s a hands-on playbook for the modern freelancer navigating today’s fast-changing media world. Inside, you’ll learn: -How to find story ideas that sell themselves — and the outlets that will buy them. -The difference between a “topic” and a story, and why a story will land every time. -How to research and pre-report your idea before you ever hit send. -The three W’s every successful pitch must answer. (They aren't what you think!) -How to use AI responsibly to sharpen your pitch without losing your voice. -The art of following up, handling rejection, and building relationships that turn one pitch into repeat work. Packed with real-world examples, pro tips, and tools you can put to use right away, Six-Figure Pitches is both a masterclass and a survival guide for freelancers who want to thrive — not just survive — in journalism, writing and content. Because pitching isn’t just about selling a story. It’s about building a career that lasts. Perfect for: Freelance writers, editors, journalism students, content creators, and anyone ready to turn great ideas into paid assignments.

It’s another stellar week for freelance gigs. This week’s list includes opportunities with:

📺 NBC, where pay is up to $120k per year

✍️ Yahoo, where pay starts at $1 per word and goes up from there

🕹️Gizmodo, where there are a couple of interesting freelance openings

🌎 National Geographic, which pays $1 per word and more

All of these calls for pitches include the editor's email address and pitching guidelines.

If you want to nail your pitch to these top-tier outlets, I suggest grabbing my ebook, which is full of email pitch templates that work 85% of the time. It’s what I use to successfully pitch all of my stories, and I’ve honed it over the years.

On the full-time front, we’ve got a LOT of opportunities, too. These include jobs with:

🍎Apple: Two job opportunities that pay up to $320,000+ per year

💻 Anthropic AI: Editorial jobs that pay up to $320,000 per year.

💵 Financial Times: Paying up to $150,000 per year.

🛩️ Joby: Paying up to $212,400 per year.

You may wonder why I include comms jobs on this list from time to time: That’s because I see a lot of potential crossover for journalists looking to make the jump to more stable, more lucrative work, and I know many journalists who have successfully made the transition and are very happy. While I’ve had opportunities to go to the other side (frequently referred to as the “dark side” by many), I have never felt drawn to that portion of the work. It’s probably because I am far too independent, if I’m honest.  There are a few good, solid comms jobs (and they tend to be remote) on the list this week.
